I hate to admit this, but I’m behind on the adult coloring book bandwagon. I’ve enjoyed my fair share of printable coloring pages (thanks to the many talented and generous designers out there) but I haven’t owned my very own grown up coloring book until now. When I saw Whatever Is Lovely I simply couldn’t resist.
All the super intricate coloring books out there seem overwhelming instead of enjoyable. Whatever Is Lovely is such a joy to pick up though. Since there are a handful of artists, illustrators, and hand letterers that contributed to the book there is a lot of variety in the designs. Some of the pages are so simple they can be colored in in just a few short, happy minutes. Others are more intricate so I enjoy coloring those in after everyone else has gone to bed. I can grab a cup of tea, put on my favorite music, and color to my heart’s content. It’s pretty awesome.
Most of the designs in the book are themed around animals, flowers/trees, and celestial bodies. With the mix of styles every page remains unique. I could color page after page of flowers and never get bored. Each page illustrates a quote from an inspirational writer, hymn, or Scripture. Honestly, the pages are beautiful enough to frame as art even before they’re colored in. On the back of each page you’ll often find more information about where the quote comes from and how it came to be.
The pages are sturdy, thick, and perfect for colored pencils. I’ve been using Prismacolor Scholar colored pencils and have been thrilled with both the quality of the pencils and how well the paper has responded to them. On the back of the pages I’ve colored on you can sometimes see a very faint outline of the printed page, but never any mark or indention from the colored pencils. While it’s not made for watercolor, I’d like to try my Koi watercolors with it sometime. I think the pages would hold up pretty well.
Whatever Is Lovely has helped bring back the joy of coloring for me. I’m so impressed by the style of this coloring book and the message it shares. I hope to see more coloring books like this.
