I’m really careful when it comes to protecting my phone. This means no fun, pretty cases for me. Instead, I end up with a heavy duty but super boring case. As you’re well aware by now, I find a way to customize just about everything with my Silhouette. So the second I got my new phone case I cooked up a plan to customize it. With the PixScan™ cutting mat and adhesive vinyl you’ll be able to create a custom phone decal too!
Place the phone case on the PixScan™ cutting mat. Take a picture making sure to include the whole PixScan™ mat. Try to take it from as straight on as possible. Go ahead and import it to your computer. This is what my picture looked like…
Open up Silhouette Studio and find the PixScan™ button on the top left corner. You’ll see an area open up on the right side of the screen that says Pixscan. Click on “import from file” and then click on the box that says “import Pixscan image from file”.
Find your file and open it in the window that pops up. As long as everything has already been calibrated properly you’ll see your picture in your cutting space.
Drop your design onto the cutting mat. You’ll be able to arrange it without any guesswork of whether or not it will fit right when it finally gets to your phone. If you have any open parts in your case that interfere with your design (like mine has around the Apple logo) just use the trace tool.
Now that you have the perfect shape cut out you can integrate it into your design. I couldn’t help but use this polaroid camera cutout from the Silhouette Design Store. All I did was delete the lines from the lens part of the design and replace it with the shape I got from using the trace tool. It gives you a completely custom fit!
I added the echo park smile design and filled in the colors to mimic the adhesive vinyl I’m using.
Since you only needed the PixScan™ mat for perfect sizing, open up a new cutting area. Copy the designs to the new cutting area. Do not resize anything. Cut the designs out of adhesive vinyl on your regular cutting mat.
Once the designs have been cut from vinyl use transfer tape to move them to your phone case. If you need a refresher on weeding and transferring adhesive vinyl take a look at my tutorial for creating vinyl mixer decals. Since my vinyl decal was sized to perfection it was super easy to transfer to my phone case.
You can see here how precise the cut was where I traced the opening.
Make sure to save your file in Silhouette Studio that way you can change out your designs as often as you’d like. In case anyone is wondering, this is the phone case I’m using. I bought it a few days ago from Amazon and so far I really like it. It comes with two extra interchangeable covers which means more customizing is in my future!
