As I was waiting for Platon to get home on Friday I started toying with the idea of getting out of town for the weekend. He was up for the adventure, so we packed a bag and headed for Kansas City.
On Saturday morning we drove around looking for a quick bite. We passed a donut shop with a nice sized line and figured it must be good. LaMar’s Donuts was definitely the right choice! We enjoyed a few yummy donuts and were on our way.
I found out that the Boulevard Brewing Company offers free public tours. We got there just before they opened and scored a spot on the first tour of the day. We had a fun time on the tour. The brewery is surprisingly gorgeous with huge windows bringing in natural light. I was really impressed to learn that they are zero landfill company who has found ways to recycle most of their waste. We even got to sample a few of their beers during the tour. I’m not really a beer drinker, but I did enjoy their Unfiltered Wheat Beer and Pale Ale. I’m so glad we got a chance to take the tour.
On Sunday we ate an early lunch at Fritz’s. Steven is obsessed with trains, so this place was a must do.
We were seated at a booth and took a look at the menu. When we were ready we picked up the phone and placed our order.
A few minutes later we heard a whistle as the train delivered the food to our table.
The train runs along the side of the restaurant and then lowers the box of food down.
We ordered a couple burgers, a grilled cheese, onion rings, and a milkshake to share. It was your typical tasty but greasy diner food. Our only complaint is that the portions were on the small side. Steven loved his grilled cheese, although he was too busy going crazy over the trains.
While the green train only shows up when there is food to deliver, the train in the center of the restaurant runs continuously.
Eating at Fritz’s was pure heaven for my train loving toddler. Take a look at his goofy “here comes the train” face…
We spent some time at the City Market and then headed to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I didn’t know what to expect, but wow were we impressed! I was so busy enjoying it I didn’t even take pictures! I love museums, but art museums aren’t usually at the top of my list. This museum was really interesting though because it contained a lot of artifacts and had a wide variety of collections. Admission was free, which was awesome since this was a last minute budget minded trip. I would have loved to spend more time there, but the boys were getting hungry.
Before leaving town we stopped at B.B.’s BBQ. How could we take a trip to Kansas City without eating barbeque?
Platon got the short end ribs with skillet fries and I got a sliced beef sandwich with battered fries.
Man oh man was it good! The portions were huge and the prices were more than reasonable. It was the perfect end to our fun little trip.
