We eat a ton of fruit in this house. I actually have to tell the boys to go easy otherwise they’ll eat a week’s worth of fruit in one day! Fruit can get crazy expensive so I buy whatever is on sale for the week. This works well for us since it tends to rotate and we aren’t picky when it comes to fruit.
I use this simple wash to clean fruits or veggies where the skin gets eaten. I especially love using the wash for strawberries. They taste fresher and last longer in the fridge. The homemade fruit and veggie wash is simply a mixture of vinegar and water. You won’t be able to taste any hint of vinegar leftover on fruit or veggies, but it will clean everything well.
This is how I washed strawberries this week, but this method works for any other fruit or veggie you need to clean.
In a bowl or the sink mix 1/4 cup vinegar with every 3 cups of cold water.
I like to cut the top of each strawberry off before placing it in the wash.
Mix them around with your hands a little bit and let them soak for a couple of minutes.
Place the strawberries in a colander and rinse under cold water.
Do you see all the dirt left behind in the wash? Yuck.
Place the strawberries on a towel and pat them dry.
Once you’ve gotten as much moisture out as you can, store them in the fridge. As long as the strawberries are fresh to begin with they’ve lasted at least a week in the fridge for us. When I get home from the grocery store I wash and cut most of the fruit. Then it goes into reusable containers in the fridge. This way it is ready to snack on whenever we want and I only have to clean once.
