When I was younger I thought my mom was crazy for getting excited about kitchen items. Having to endure a trip through the kitchen department of any store was the worst. I didn’t care how it looked or what it did…kitchen stuff was boring! Then I married my hungry husband. Suddenly I had to feed people. The more time I spent in our kitchen, the more I realized my mom wasn’t crazy. I wanted my own fancy mixer and collection of pretty dishes. I wanted all of those amazing gadgets and appliances that make life in the kitchen easier. A few years into married and family life and now I’ve got my own collection. Here are my top 5 kitchen items under $25 that will make your time in the kitchen more productive and enjoyable.
1. Pizza Stone
We use our pizza stone daily. Yes, it bakes a perfect pizza (homemade or frozen). It does so much more though. Restaurant leftovers taste new again when they’re reheated on the stone. It is also great for baking cookies since they just slide right off. We don’t have a toaster so I just place bread on the stone and broil for a minute. Since it is non stick I don’t have to use foil like I would with a baking sheet. Oh, and fries are amazingly crispy without frying. Wilton carries this 15″ ceramic pizza stone for around $20. This is seriously the best twenty bucks you’ll spend for your kitchen.
2. Slow Cooker
I have a confession to make, I hate dealing with raw meat. It has to be done, but it still grosses me out. To avoid it as often as I can I use my slow cooker. Meat is so tender and delicious without any hard work on my part. Making food in the slow cooker saves me a lot of time. Not only does it cook itself, but there is very little clean up. Did you know that you can even make bread in your slow cooker (I’ve tried this and it’s amazing!)? With so many slow cooker recipes out there you’ll never run out of ideas for what to make. For only $20 Crock-Pot’s demask print slow cooker gives you both function and style.
3. Rice Cooker
This doesn’t get used as often as other items on the list, but when I do use it I am thankful to have it. I’ve never had luck with cooking rice on the stove. It just never works out for me. My rice cooker never fails me though. I dump in the water and the rice and press a button. I let it do its thing while I do something else in the kitchen. Perfect rice every single time. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also easy to clean. Have you seen Aroma’s gorgeously red rice cooker and steamer? For under $20 it cooks your rice and steams your meal at the same time. Did you know you can cook more than just rice in your rice cooker? I love a multitasking appliance!
I found mine at Ikea, but if you don’t have one close to you Amazon has a great selection. I use different cutting boards for different things, so it is nice to have a collection. Since they’re large you can cut whatever you need without making a mess of your counter top. Their flexibility makes it easy to transfer food to your pan or container. I’m always lacking kitchen storage so I appreciate that these hardly take up any space. This set of three Norpro Cut-N-Slice Flexible Cutting Boards has terrific reviews and is well under $10. How could you go wrong with these?
I use my immersion blender more than I ever would have expected. It is perfect for when you have a small amount of liquid that you need to blend, and don’t want to get out your big blender. I get the creamiest mashed potatoes when I use my immersion blender. This is another item that is easy to clean and doesn’t take up much storage space. This blender from Hamilton Beach does double duty with it’s whisk attachment. For around $15 this is a steal.
